How Conveyor Belts Work in a Modern Factory Setting

The word convey means transmit or to send hence the term conveyor belt. Conveyor belts are quite common even in modern factories of today. They are often wide belts which are attached to one or two loops which turn motor driven rotors. It is this loop that is known as the conveyor belt which in the majority of cases is made from layers of rubber in order to give the belt both its shape and make it safe for loading. There is enough friction between both the belt and its rotor that allow it to stick. Modern day factory conveyor belts are usually computerised, conveyor technology (Fördertechnik – doh-jennes.de) is big business nowadays as many companies such as supermarkets rely on this sort of technology.

In a modern day factory setting where robots and computerized machines have taken over much of what could be found in a factory dating back to the 1950s the conveyor belt still lives on. Today like 50 years ago conveyor belts are still used to transport heavy products and material across a large distance usually from one end of a factory to another. Today’s conveyor belts are however slightly different in terms of speed as well as some having twists and turns. These twists and turns can be seen as wheels and cone shaped rotors which help the conveyor to turn efficiently. All of the latest conveyor belts used in large factors are controlled by computers that even monitor the belt for problems.

Now conveyor belts are not just limited to factories as nowadays many different types of conveyor belts are used in places such as pizza shops, bakeries and airports. These are often slow moving conveyor belts that are used to slowly move items though the oven cooking them properly until they are finally passed on to the packing stage. Grocery stores and airports use a similar type of conveyor belt but one which is able to support more weight than those used in a pizza factory or bakery.

Conveyor belts in everyday lives

There are also many other variations of the classic factory conveyor belts the most common of which are escalators found in large department stores. These are not exactly the types used in factories but the principle on which they have been established is the same. Instead of moving heavy items these have been adapted to move people up and down floors of a department store or mall.
